Grand Marais House

Lakeview Retreat

This project became an environmental comparison between the Kahaluu House in Hawaii and a colder dlimate in Grand Marais, Minnesotta. Without being modified substantially from its original form in Kahaluu, the building was turned on end and became vertical. This was done to acheive a maximum amount of solar gain.

The new residence has become a retreat home for the architect and his cellist wife, where clients are invited to enjoy the Minnesota wilderness while the architect undergoes design. The building is situated on the bank of lake Greenbo, overlooking the water and providing a bird's eye view from the tree tops. An office with rooftop access provides a secluded space for the architect, while a recording room for the cellist is situated in the first subterranean level. The guest suite similarly allows for sweeping views over the lake, and is organized to a keep the everyday living quarters amoungst the three lowest levels for convenience.

The residence utilizes a combination of thermal mass, solar heat gain and radiant heat from a centrally located flue to maintain confortable temperatures during colder months. The connection between the lake and uppermost reaches of the tree canopy is made through the circulation of the building.
